High five to the ridiculous effort of escaping from oneself. Awakening the lavas of imagination, screaming from the feeling of having one skin-layer missing, creating chaos and enabling transformation. To touch, or being touched. An ode to those that unite in the same fire both smoke and flame.
Ode to you is a dance performance juxtaposing layers of bodily states, voicing and sounding, video-art projection and the circus discipline of hairhanging. As artist and person, I raise questions about our assumptions with the so-called “mental illnesses”. What is mental illness? Who can call themselves sane in a sick society? All of us have a unique power and therefore a creative potential and capacity for resistance.
This piece links the different extreme emotional states that can be reached with the artistic temperament, making an Ode to that other part that society rejects, to that other that we try to hide, to that other that we are all. It moves away, thus, from the stigmatization of pathologizing medical discourses, and proposes this dance performance NOT in terms of representation or victimization, but with humor and love. It speaks of the light and shadow that is found in each and every human being; of liberation and the ambivalence of being vulnerable subjects.
